Home NZ Emissions Trading What Type of Forest Do You Have?

The Figure is a flow chart created by MAF[1] which allows you to navigate through the various nuances of the regulations applying to forestry. For pre 1990 forest there is an exemption of 50 ha in area which you must apply for (provided you have a total in ALL titles owned of less than 50ha) and if you deforest 2ha you are not required to report this. All of the details are in the diagram and on the MAF website.

Forest Decision TreePost  1989 forest is known as “Kyoto Forest” and is eligible to receive credits under the New Zealand Emissions Trading System.

Pre 1990 forest is expected to receive a one off nominal allocation of credits to help compensate owners for the loss in land value due to reduced land use flexibility.
